Notice what happens away from the screen
You have enlarged the text twice, and the words still swim a little when you look back from your phone. By the end of the day, you find yourself rubbing your eyes. Step away for a moment and notice whether that changes how they feel. If the discomfort tends to ease when you stop reading or working, take note. Dryness and eye strain can overlap, and recurring symptoms are worth discussing at an eye exam.
Change the light before changing everything else
Look for bright window or lamp reflections on the display. Angle the screen away from glare or soften the light with a blind. Match the display brightness to the room and increase text size until you can read comfortably without leaning in.
Keep your screen around arm’s length away if that feels comfortable, and use the glasses prescribed for your work if you have them. If you sit under a fan or air-conditioning vent, try moving out of the direct airflow.
Give your eyes a real break
Look at something farther away for a short stretch and blink normally. Use a natural pause, such as sending a message or finishing a page, as a cue. Longer breaks away from the screen give you a chance to move as well.
If the eyes still feel gritty, an optometrist or pharmacist can advise whether lubricating drops are suitable. Ask specifically about contact lens compatibility if you wear lenses.
Three quick checks for a screen break
- Look away
- Focus on something farther away for a short stretch.
- Blink
- Let your eyes blink naturally before you return to the screen.
- Check glare
- Move the lamp, adjust the blind or tilt the display.
Know when to arrange an eye examination
Book an eye examination if symptoms persist, recur or make it hard to focus despite changing your setup. Seek urgent eye care if you wear contact lenses and develop a red eye. Sudden loss of vision or sudden severe eye pain needs emergency assessment.
A small checklist to keep
- Increase text size before leaning closer.
- Take regular breaks to look into the distance.
- Arrange an eye examination for persistent symptoms.
